What we do

One studio, from first sketch to final mulch.

Most landscape projects pass through three or four separate firms, and it shows. At Hartwell & Moss the designer, the builder and the horticulturist share a studio, a standard and a kettle.

01 · Garden design

Designs that belong to their ground.

Every design begins with a slow walk and a soil test. We produce concept sketches, scaled masterplans, construction drawings and 3D visuals. But the real work is listening: to the site, its history, and the way you want to live in it.

  • Topographical survey & soil analysis
  • Concept design, moodboards & sketch plans
  • Masterplan with fixed-cost build estimate
  • Planning applications & conservation-area support
  • Lighting, irrigation & water-feature design

02 · Landscape build

Built by the hands that drew it.

Our construction team has been with us for over a decade: stonemasons, joiners and groundworkers who treat a garden wall with the same care as a house wall. Because design and build sit in one studio, nothing is lost in translation and nothing is “extra”.

  • Natural stone paving, walling & steps
  • Green oak structures, pergolas & decking
  • Ponds, rills & natural swimming pools
  • Drainage, groundworks & level changes
  • Fixed-price contracts with staged payments

03 · Planting design

Right plant, right place, right decade.

Planting is where a garden stops being a construction site and starts being alive. We design in layers of structure, matrix and seasonal drama, using plants matched to your actual soil rather than a magazine's. Everything is peat-free and much of it is grown within thirty miles of the studio.

  • Layered, naturalistic planting plans
  • Wildflower meadow design & establishment
  • Peat-free sourcing from local nurseries
  • Trees: selection, supply & planting
  • Planting handbooks written for real people

04 · Seasonal care

Gardens are verbs, not nouns.

The first three years decide whether a planting scheme knits together or falls apart. Our horticulture team returns on a seasonal rhythm to edit, divide, prune and renew, keeping the design's intent alive as the garden finds its own voice.

  • Quarterly, monthly or weekly care visits
  • Meadow cutting & aftercare calendars
  • Formative & renovation pruning
  • Border editing & succession planting
  • Annual garden review with your designer

Fees

Straightforward about money.

Design fees are fixed and quoted before we begin, typically from £2,800 for a full garden design. Build costs vary with scope; most complete projects fall between £40,000 and £250,000. We will always tell you early if your ambitions and budget disagree.
