ExploreAmersham · The Chilterns · Est. 2011
We are an award-winning landscape design studio creating gardens, meadows and courtyards that belong to their landscape: designed with intent, built to last, planted for the long story.
The studio
Hartwell & Moss was founded in 2011 by garden designer Eleanor Hartwell and landscape craftsman Tom Moss, working from a converted dairy on the edge of Amersham. Fifteen years on, we remain a deliberately small studio, where every garden is designed, built and planted by the same hands from first sketch to final mulch.
We believe a garden should feel inevitable: as if it had always been there, waiting to be uncovered. That means honest materials, plants chosen for soil rather than fashion, and designs that reward patience.
What we do
Masterplans, concept design and detailed drawings for gardens of every scale, from a courtyard in Marlow to a twelve-acre estate on the Downs. Surveys, planning support and 3D visuals included.
ExploreOur in-house build team crafts the bones of the garden: stone, oak, brick, steel and water. One team, one standard, no hand-offs. The people who drew it are the people who build it.
ExploreNaturalistic, layered planting matched to your soil, aspect and appetite for maintenance. Peat-free nursery stock, meadow establishment and planting plans you can actually read.
ExploreA garden is a beginning, not an ending. Our horticulturists return through the seasons to edit, prune and renew, so the design matures the way it was drawn.

A forgotten Victorian orchard brought back as the heart of a family garden.

An eighteenth-century kitchen garden, rebuilt brick by brick.

Four acres of amenity lawn returned to chalk downland flora.

A small town garden that lives largest after dark.
How it works
Every project follows the same unhurried path. You will always know where you are, what happens next, and what it costs.
We visit, walk the ground with you, and listen. Soil, light, views, and the way you actually live, before a single line is drawn.
Sketches, moodboards and a scaled masterplan. We iterate together until the garden feels like yours, then fix the budget.
Our own team builds in tidy, well-communicated phases. Planting comes last, timed to the season, never to the calendar.
We return through the first years to edit and adjust. A Hartwell & Moss garden is at its best a decade after we leave.
Kind words
They gave us a garden we didn’t know we wanted and now can’t imagine living without. Three years on, it just keeps getting better, exactly as they promised it would.
The rare firm that turns up when they say, builds what they drew, and leaves the place tidier than they found it. The walled garden is the best thing we have ever done to this house.

Chilterns clay breaks hearts and spades in equal measure. Here are the plants that genuinely thrive in it: no gypsum, no grit, no gimmicks.
“Wild” and “abandoned” are not the same thing. How to bring meadow, deadwood and water into a suburban plot and keep it looking intentional.
